What the AudioPen route actually involves

This is the current community setup, laid out honestly. If you're already running it and it works, there's no reason to switch.

1. Install a third-party plugin

jonashaefele/audiopen-obsidian — around 573 installs, last release 0.2.0 in 2024.

2. Sign in to a separate web app

A Firebase-hosted bridge at audiopen-obsidian.web.app, authenticated with a Google account.

3. Generate and paste a token

Created in the web app, pasted into the plugin settings.

4. Configure a webhook in AudioPen

Point AudioPen at the bridge so new notes get pushed through.

AudioPen and Obsidian FAQ

Does AudioPen sync to Obsidian natively?
No. There is no official AudioPen integration for Obsidian. The community solution routes AudioPen's webhook through a separate web app, which a third-party Obsidian plugin then reads from.
Is the AudioPen Obsidian plugin still maintained?
It appears not to be. jonashaefele/audiopen-obsidian sits at roughly 573 installs with its last release, 0.2.0, in 2024. It may still work for existing users, but it isn't seeing active development.
Can I move my existing AudioPen notes to Obsidian?
AudioPen lets you export your notes, and exported text can be brought into a vault manually. What the community setup adds is automation for new notes; the bulk history is still a manual export.
How is SpeakPen's Obsidian sync different?
It's first-party and it's the whole path: you record in SpeakPen, and the SpeakPen Obsidian plugin pulls finished Markdown into your vault. No bridge web app, no webhook, no extra sign-in. Sync is incremental, so only new and changed notes move.
Should I switch if my AudioPen setup already works?
Probably not. If your webhook and bridge are running and you're happy with them, switching buys you fewer moving parts and not much else. The case for switching is strongest if you're setting this up for the first time, or if the unmaintained plugin has started causing you problems.
